Zoo veterinarians offer routine & emergency medical treatment to different types of animals kept at zoos. By observing the behavior of animals & taking care of them, these veterinarians are successful in diagnosing illnesses, learning the intensity of injuries, and afterward, giving treatment. As zoo animals are sometimes exotic, their vets also embark on a different kind of journey for becoming a specialist to work with them. Let’s have a look at those different stages:
- Getting an Undergraduate Degree: Veterinary courses require those students who have already studied subjects such as anatomy, biology, animal science, chemistry, zoology, and physiology during their undergraduate education.
- Earning ‘Doctor of Veterinary Medicine’ Degree: Aspirants who want to become a Zoo veterinarian need to have a ‘Doctor of Veterinary Medicine’ (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree from a veterinary medicine college. The course duration is typically 4 years.
- Getting a State License: No matter in which state you live, as a veterinarian, you should be holding a practice license. After graduating from an accredited veterinary school, one should also pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam. Some states have their own licensing test too.
- Complete an Internship: In order to get experience at the zoo, many new veterinarians pursue1 year internship programs associated with schools. This allows new vets to work & learn under a supervised environment among other vets & exotic animals
Get Specialized Training in Residency Program: The certification in zoological medicine is of 3 to 4 years which is a residency program approved by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM). It provides in-depth training & improves skills while working at Zoos, Animal Parks, Aquariums, etc.
